SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — De’Aaron Fox scored 38 points in his long-awaited playoff debut and the Sacramento Kings celebrated their return to the postseason after a record 16-year drought by beating the defending-champion Golden State Warriors 126-123 on Saturday night.

Capitals, coach Laviolette part ways after missing playoffs

The Washington Capitals and coach Peter Laviolette have decided to part ways after the team missed the playoffs. General manager Brian MacLellan announced the decision following the end of the organization’s eight-year postseason streak. He described it as a mutual parting. Laviolette coached the Capitals for the past three seasons and his contract was expiring. The Capitals reached the playoffs in each of the first two before losing in the first round. Washington will now search for the eighth coach of Alex Ovechkin’s NHL career. He is 73 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career record. Ovechkin turns 38 in September and has three years remaining on his contract.

TORONTO (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays lost their first game following a record-tying 13-0 start as Colin Poche forced in two runs with bases-loaded walks and second baseman Brandon Lowe made a key error in a four-run fifth inning that lifted the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-3 win on Friday night.

Longboard dance: Moves, music, risk elevate a skating hybrid

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — This winter’s been a hard one in Southern California. Highways flood and the rain keeps coming. Pedestrians pick their way across fallen cypress trees, around puddles on sidewalks roped off with caution tape. Between fire, flood, and drought, sometimes it feels like the end of the world.

Rain halts Masters play yet again, making Sunday a long day

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Heavy rain that left pools of standing water across Augusta National brought play to a halt at the Masters on Saturday, and Brooks Koepka and the rest of the field will have a long Sunday slog to determine who will wear the green jacket.

NASCAR’s Larson, Briscoe don’t see edge on Bristol’s dirt

Dirt guys like Kyle Larson and Chase Briscoe figure to have a huge edge this weekend when the NASCAR Cup Series moves to Bristol’s dirt layout. They’re not so sure. Both wonder if there’s any advantage from their younger days as top-notch dirt drivers because the Next Gen cars are so much heavier to handle on the slippery surface. That showed last year when Tyler Reddick and Briscoe were dueling for the lead on the final lap and spun out right before the finish line. The third Bristol dirt race will run Sunday night.

NHL’s Pride nights collide with LGBTQ+ political climate

After seven NHL players recently opted out of wearing rainbow-colored jerseys on their teams’ Pride nights for the first time, the league’s commissioner says it is weighing the future of the events. Some NHL fans and LGBTQ+ supporters say it’s a sign that a political climate that has led to restrictions on LGTBQ+ people and transgender sports participation both in the U.S. and internationally is now threatening events that are meant to be fun and affirming. One advocate says that because the NHL has been such a leader in how to do Pride nights well, it’s conspicuous to see players roll back their support.
