Low world-wide participation drives HIBT cancellation

The organizing committee of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) regretfully announced the cancellation of the 2024 tournament scheduled for July 27 through August 3, 2024. Despite extensive efforts to attract participants from around the globe, including robust outreach campaigns and promotional initiatives, the desired level of interest necessary to uphold the tournament’s standards has not been achieved. The 2024 billfish tournament would have been the 62nd annual.

Two BIIF judokas win state titles

Two Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) judokas became state champions, as Hilo High sophomore Kamalei Sakai won gold for the 115 lbs. division and Waiakea High senior Iya Sadanchikova placed first in the 109 lbs. division to lead the Warriors’girls squad to a fourth-place team finish and secure Waiakea’s first gold medal since 2018 in the HHSAA state championship on Saturday in Honolulu.

Waiakea boys and girls tennis took home the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) team titles Saturday morning at the Warriors’ home court — officially capping off an island season of dominance.
