Using George Floyd’s death to attack Haley, DeSantis shows he doesn’t ‘get’ empathy
Ron DeSantis doesn’t do empathy. He’s a governor who likes to talk tough on the presidential trail; such a foreign concept appears to get computed in his head as “left-wing mindset.”
Convict Santos before ousting him: Ethics Committee fails to recommend expulsion
Less than an hour after the House Ethics Committee published their extensive report on the elected fraudster from New York, Con(gress)man George Santos took to Twitter to claim that he will not be running for a second term next year. Don’t believe anything this schnook says, since everything is a lie.
US credit gets downgraded as signs of default become clearer
The world is waking up to a stark reality that could affect tens of millions of Americans: The federal government may be unable to pay its bills sooner rather than later.
When does a ‘B’ signify a ‘D’? In many classrooms
Despite widespread griping about the quality of K-12 education, polls consistently show that most parents are happy with the public schools their children attend. Since 2001, Gallup surveys on the topic show an average 76% satisfaction rate for those with kids attending a local campus.
Nikki Haley, Big Sister: Speech, even anonymous speech, must be protected, not banned
In the name of national security, former South Carolina governor and current Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley wants to use government authority to ban anonymous speech on social media platforms. “Every person on social media should be verified by their name,” she told Fox News.
The Biden campaign needs to pivot to marijuana
As President Joe Biden looks to boost his reelection campaign and lousy poll numbers, there’s one policy position that is popular with voters, could help unite Democrats and would leave Republicans scrambling to respond. It’s time he come out in support of legalizing recreational use of marijuana.

As I See It – Sounding the alarm on our warning systems
El Camino Real, The Royal Road (a foot trail) connected the Spanish Mission plantations on the west coast of Mexico, now partly California. The natives were worked to death in exchange for salvation. In places, roads and state highways that parallel the path are called El Camino Real, or El Camino Real Highway. Bells about a mile apart served as a security measure. Someone who was injured, or attacked could attempt to reach the nearest bell and ring it to summon help. I don’t know if it ever really worked. It might have summoned more bandits. Travel was really dangerous before the railroads; armed guards were a good idea.
Editorial: Senator’s political posturing threatens national defense
An ominous tenor of war has descended over the world. Hamas’ horrific attacks of Oct. 7, and Israel’s response in Gaza, could spur a wider conflict throughout the Middle East. Ukraine continues to resist Russia’s unprovoked attack and occupation. China’s aggressive behavior toward Taiwan could foreshadow an invasion.
Editorial: Terror group Hamas uses Gaza hospitals for cover
The usual suspects are rebuking Israel for “attacks” on hospitals in Gaza. Yet they speak nary a word about a terrorist organization that purposely encourages civilian deaths to create a propaganda tool designed to advance its efforts to eradicate the Jewish state.
Editorial: Trump’s dangerous ‘vermin’ speech would have been at home in Nazi Germany
It is a full-time job to call out every one of Donald Trump’s lies and efforts to divide this nation, but his “vermin” address on Saturday deserves special attention.
Editorial: Haley, DeSantis look strongest in GOP debate
It’s difficult to name a winner in the Wednesday GOP debate in Miami given that all five of those on stage appear to be competing for silver. Yet signs abound that at least one of the contenders could yet emerge as a serious alternative to Donald Trump.
Editorial: Ukraine should postpone its election
If these were normal times, Ukraine would be preparing to hold presidential elections in March. But with war raging and parts of the country under Russian occupation, that looks increasingly infeasible. Delaying the vote makes sense — so long as the government commits to strengthening democracy in the meantime.

Concerns about rise in homelessness
It’s time for a humanitarian pause to the violence in Gaza
It has been more than a month since the attack on Israel that killed more than 1,400 people, according to Israeli officials. In responding to that atrocity, Israel has relentlessly bombarded Gaza and launched a ground operation with the objectives of destroying Hamas and rescuing hostages. The result has been a humanitarian catastrophe with more than 10,000 people in Gaza killed, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, and massive displacement and destruction.

Mahalo to Kona airport policeman
Sitting down all day is killing us. The cure is surprisingly simple — and difficult
From head to toe, our bodies are adapting to accommodate our devices. A majority of U.S. workers spend most of each weekday seated and looking at screens. We’ve thereby put ourselves in the midst of a slow-moving health crisis marked by alarming rates of early-onset diabetes and hypertension. Plus, by the end of most days — though it’s not the preferred medical terminology — we just feel like crap.
Election Day was a welcome rebuke to the extremists of both parties
Tuesday was a very good day if you support common sense in American politics.
