Nearly 50 years of hot malasadas: Tex Drive In recognized in Hawaii Restaurant Association Hall of Fame
HONOKAA — Hundreds of people sink their teeth into malasadas — the hole-free, pillowy Portuguese doughnuts — each day at Tex Drive In. The well-known pit stop on Mamalahoa Highway in Honokaa has been serving their square-shaped confections for almost 50 years.

Making the season bright
WAIMEA — The grand Cook Pine at Parker Ranch headquarters lit up the sky Friday night as hundreds of residents congregated at the free annual tree lighting event. HPA Handbell Choir, Na Haumana Ka Ua Paliloa, Parker School Choir and Waimea Elementary Ukulele and Hula Ensemble performed inside while free cocoa and cookies were provided on the front lawn outside.
Free ‘Farm to Keiki’ curriculum and recipe book available
Hawaii’s teachers, families, schools and community organizations can reserve a free copy of the new book, “Farm to Keiki,” and sign up for training. The book will be delivered in January.
WES earns Blue Zones worksite certification, WMS school certification
WAIMEA — In the last month, Waimea Elementary School (WES) and Waimea Middle School (WMS) have had two big accomplishments to celebrate: WES became a Blue Zones Project Approved worksite, and WMS achieved Blue Zones Project school approval.
Inaugural Ohana Art Show kicks off
Isaacs Art Center will host an exhibition of plein air paintings by artist Peter Jefferson beginning with an artist’s reception from 4-7 p.m. this Friday. Peter and his wife, Lillian, will attend.
Hamakua holiday night market scheduled
Ono foods, arts, crafts and live music will fill the Botelho Building when the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hamakua hosts a special holiday night market there from 5-9 p.m. this Friday in Honokaa.
Waikoloa Village Christmas Parade returns this Saturday
The 14th annual Waikoloa Village Christmas Parade will begin at 10 a.m. this Saturday. It will wind down the hill on Paniolo Avenue and end at Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School. The road is closed off to vehicles during the parade.

The public is invited to attend the monthly Mauna Kea Quilters meeting from 9:30 a.m.-noon this Saturday in Thelma Parker Memorial Library’s meeting room.

Join the North Hawaii Chavurah for a channuka celebration at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Number 3 Restaurant from 5-6:30 p.m. this Sunday. Latkes and punch will be served.
Gingerbread house making competition set for Dec. 15
On Dec. 15, Kamuela Farmers Market will hold a gingerbread house making contest starting at 8:30 a.m. The gingerbread and icing will be made by booth owners Pam Harsh with Kulina Lani and Carole Devenport with Cupcakes N Things. The contest will have six teams of up to three people per team. The contest will end at 10:30 a.m., with judging at 11 a.m.

Waimea teachers to be spotlighted at Twilight Parade
WAIMEA — Teachers are a community’s lifeline to the past, present and future. And they’re everywhere in the community, from classrooms to gyms, athletic events, music, singing and dance lessons, scouting and much more. They’re also grandparents, mentors, kahu, coaches and advocates. Sometimes they wear uniforms. Sometimes scrubs. Sometimes they’re barefoot, warning dangerous surf. Sometimes they’re an author, or a voice on the radio or jump out with lessons via social media.

Parker students donate nearly two tons of food
WAIMEA — Last Wednesday, Parker School students collected nearly two tons of canned goods for North Hawaii food banks as part of the school’s annual ‘Ohana Day.
