Chair Tai Chi/QiGong will happen from 1:30-2:30 p.m. today led by with Madeline Sofranac. Enjoy simple, effective hand and leg movements, postures, gentle deep breathing and pressure point techniques while seated in a chair. The class is recommended for seniors, physically challenged persons and anyone recovering from surgery or living with injuries.

Making the season bright

WAIMEA — The grand Cook Pine at Parker Ranch headquarters lit up the sky Friday night as hundreds of residents congregated at the free annual tree lighting event. HPA Handbell Choir, Na Haumana Ka Ua Paliloa, Parker School Choir and Waimea Elementary Ukulele and Hula Ensemble performed inside while free cocoa and cookies were provided on the front lawn outside.

Inaugural Ohana Art Show kicks off

Isaacs Art Center will host an exhibition of plein air paintings by artist Peter Jefferson beginning with an artist’s reception from 4-7 p.m. this Friday. Peter and his wife, Lillian, will attend.

Hamakua holiday night market scheduled

Ono foods, arts, crafts and live music will fill the Botelho Building when the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hamakua hosts a special holiday night market there from 5-9 p.m. this Friday in Honokaa.

Gingerbread house making competition set for Dec. 15

On Dec. 15, Kamuela Farmers Market will hold a gingerbread house making contest starting at 8:30 a.m. The gingerbread and icing will be made by booth owners Pam Harsh with Kulina Lani and Carole Devenport with Cupcakes N Things. The contest will have six teams of up to three people per team. The contest will end at 10:30 a.m., with judging at 11 a.m.

Waimea teachers to be spotlighted at Twilight Parade

WAIMEA — Teachers are a community’s lifeline to the past, present and future. And they’re everywhere in the community, from classrooms to gyms, athletic events, music, singing and dance lessons, scouting and much more. They’re also grandparents, mentors, kahu, coaches and advocates. Sometimes they wear uniforms. Sometimes scrubs. Sometimes they’re barefoot, warning dangerous surf. Sometimes they’re an author, or a voice on the radio or jump out with lessons via social media.

NORTH HAWAII — For the twelfth consecutive year, students in Honokaa High School’s Leadership Training Program prepared and served a free Thanksgiving dinner to community members Wednesday night.
