Waimea Domestic Violence Action Committee gathering this Friday
At 9:30 a.m. Friday, the public is invited to attend the monthly meeting at the prosecutor’s office in Waimea, located next to the feed store at Holomua Center at the Kamamalu Street/Mamalahoa Highway intersection. Topics to be discussed include the Victim Navigator Training Manual, and updates from the legislative, fundraising, events and grant writing committees.
Deadline extended to apply for Beginning Farmer-Rancher Development Program
The Kohala Center’s Beginning Farmer-Rancher Development Program is a nine-month course including 188 hours of classroom training, online coursework, on-farm demonstrations and workshops, and field trips, as well as a student-selected assignment.
Wahine clothing swapsies scheduled Jan. 26
From 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sea Dandelion in Honokaa will host a monthly clothing swap for ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes. Participants can donate any clothing they no longer need and rummage through others’ cast-offs for new second-hand pieces. Donations are accepted only if clean and in good condition.
‘Kona Coast’ featured in Classic Films series
As part of Kahilu Theatre’s Classic Hawaiian Film Series, “Kona Coast” will be shown at 10 a.m. Jan. 30 .
Two military convoys scheduled from Kawaihae this week
Soldiers from the 728th Military Police Battalion and Marines from VMU-3 are scheduled to convoy from Kawaihae Docks to Pohakuloa Training Area beginning at 8 a.m. and no later than 3:30 p.m. today and Wednesday.
Windstreamer event coming to Thelma Parker Library
At 10 a.m. this Thursday, preschool children can create a weather tool and learn how weather on Earth is always changing. Children will also learn how they and scientists can watch and use tools to observe different types of weather, wind direction, wind speed, temperature and precipitation.
Community health and wellness fair coming to Kings’ Shops
Blue Zones Project will host the Ulu Ke Ola event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. On Kings’ Shops Center Stage, a Zumba and Pound with Dance 4 Action demo will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a cooking demo at noon with Chef Ippy Aiona of The Koa Table and a live performance by Honokaa Jazz Band at 2 p.m.
Teen Night returns to North Kohala
The Book vs. Movie this month is “Everything, Everything” by Nicola Yoon. North Kohala Public Library invites teens to the evening event that will begin at 6 p.m. January 22.
MIT researchers hosting volcanic air pollution presentation
From noon-1 p.m. Jan. 24, MIT’s Ben Crawford and Jesse Kroll will host a free presentation for the public on poor air quality due to volcanic air pollution — the single largest environmental risk factor for premature death globally, largely unknown due to a lack of widespread observations. The presenters will share details about a planned network of air quality monitors throughout Hawaii Island that will measure levels of volcanic air pollution to enable high-resolution monitoring for health and regulatory purposes.
100 Women quarterly meeting scheduled
The next 100 Women Who Care in North Hawaii meeting will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Paniolo Country Inn in Waimea. New members and visitors are welcome to attend.

‘Aloha Expressionism’ book signing event coming to North Kohala
From 5-7 p.m. Saturday, “Aloha Expressionism by Contemporary Hawaii Artists” and the book’s featured artists will be celebrated at a book-signing reception for earning an Award of Excellence at the Ka Palapala Poʻokela Awards. The event will take place at both Tiffany’s Art Agency and Wishard Gallery in downtown Hawi.

Table-to-farm dinner set for Jan. 7
Beginning at 2 p.m. this Sunday, an “Outstanding in the Field” dinner will be held at Primal Cuts farm in Kapaau as part of the annual tour. The guest chef will be Noah Hester of Kamuela’s Puako Provisions & Catering. Primal Cuts farmers, Jessica Wieloh and Jim Pedersen, raise grass-fed sheep and beef cattle and grow tropical crops including breadfruit, coconuts, papayas, bananas and hot peppers.
