EPA: Hawaii Island leads nation in sulfur dioxide emissions

HONOLULU — Hawaii Island has the highest rate of sulfur dioxide emission in the nation, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a distinction established before this month’s toxic eruptions began pouring from Kilauea Volcano.

Ashfall Advisory canceled

The National Weather Service has cancelled the Ashfall Advisory as of 8:33 a.m. this morning. Volcanic emissions from Halemaumau Crater have decreased since Tuesday evening. The NWS could reissue the advisory as conditions warrant.

Several fissures active, producing spatter, HVO reports

KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that several fissures are actively producing spatter, however, the flow from fissure 17 has not advanced since Tuesday, according to a Wednesday morning update from Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Roads open, but lava still spews

HILO ­— As lava continued to flow from a fissure in Lanipuna Gardens late Monday, officials were considering contingencies if the lava cuts off a major highway.
