In ‘Homeroom,’ an unprecedent school year caught on film
NEW YORK — Oakland filmmaker Peter Nicks had already made two well-regarded documentaries capturing the flawed institutions of his city and their role in shaping local lives: 2012’s “The Waiting Room,” about a public hospital, and 2017’s “The Force,” about the Oakland Police Department during a wave of shootings and protests.

The decision was difficult to make, but in a recent Facebook post, Kahilu Theatre Executive Director Sara Neely announced the venue would be canceling its four-show run of “Matilda the Musical.”
‘Beauty and the Beast’ dazzles Hilo audiences

WASHINGTON — The Kennedy Center Honors will return in December with a class that includes Motown Records creator Berry Gordy, “Saturday Night Live” mastermind Lorne Michaels and actress-singer Bette Midler. Organizers expect to operate at full capacity, after last year’s ceremony was delayed for months and later conducted under COVID-19 restrictions.

Vocalist Nyla Watson and pianist Ana Flavia Zuim wowed the Kahilu Stage Sunday afternoon. Donned in a glittering red sequined gown, Watson charmed the audience with her life in song. The rapport between singer and accompanist was warm and genuine, as Watson shared her heart on her sistership with Zuim.
One sweet show: California Honeydrops deliver stunning performance
You may not have heard their name before, but the funky Bay Area band known as The California Honeydrops (CHD) has a strong enough following to sell out the Kahilu for a Sunday afternoon show. Originally, they were scheduled for a 60-minute livestream/in-person concert, but once the band got cookin’ and the crowd started dancing (in their socially distanced seating areas), the seven-piece ensemble remained on stage for nearly two hours.
HPAF kicks off summer series with Stars of Tomorrow

Superstar trio performs Big Island concert debut at Kahilu Theatre
Three award-winning Native Hawaiian performers have formed a new and exciting trio called Kulāiwi and made their Waimea concert debut last Friday at the Kahilu Theatre. Kulāiwi means “land of my ancestors” and many of the songs in their set focused on the Hawaiian Islands as told from a proud indigenous point-of-view.
