Joseph Walsh Hanley Sr., 78, of Hilo died Dec. 7 at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 26, 1934, in El Paso, Texas, he was a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, founder and chairman emeritus of Orchid Isle Auto Center and Inter Pacific Motors Inc., president of Big Island Car Wash Inc.-Ziebart and Inter Pacific Advertising and former president of Mid Pac Auto Center on Kauai, past director of the National Automobile Dealers Association, past-president and director of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association, national director (emeritus) of the Navy League of the United States, founding member and director (emeritus) of the Battleship Missouri Memorial, co-founder of the Sunao Wada Foundation, past-president of the Rotary Club of Hilo and Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, founder of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, Rose of Tralee Chapter and member of the Fraternity of Kappa Sigma, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou, Civilian Advisory Group United States Army, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.
Friends may call at 9 a.m. Dec. 17 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou for a 10:45 a.m. eulogy and 11 a.m. Mass. Family requests casual attire be worn. Cut flowers or lei are welcome. Family requests no monetary gifts.
He is survived by daughter, Mary (Doug) Espejo of Hilo; sons, Joseph (Diana) Hanley Jr. and Robert (Kathleen Katt) Hanley, both of Hilo, James (Anita Tatum) Hanley of Kailua-Kona, Jonathan (Kerri) Hanley of Falls Church, Va.; sister, Mary Gray of Hilo; hanai son, Alamo Momotaro of Majuro, Marshall Islands; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
