The 30-year-old Kahilu Theatre will undergo renovations from July through December.
Kahilu Theatre Foundation was awarded $1.5 million in grant-in-aid funding for capital improvements from the Hawaii State Legislature. This facility improvement project is already well underway with design by Rhoady Lee Architecture &Design and planning phases in the works and certain significant projects such as a new roof confirmed and scheduled for execution.
In addition to the new roof, Kahilu Theatre will sport an elegant new lobby and reception design, concession and bar to match, new overall flooring for galleries, main lobby, theatre and administrative areas as well as updated furnishings and accents to improve and provide the best possible patron experience.
Significant improvements will be made to all technical equipment standards including new projection equipment that will allow for the rebirth of film in Waimea, additional lighting instruments, sound equipment and draperies all meant to bring the theatre up to current commercial standards.
The improvements will allow for some much needed exterior and interior modifications that will provide first class accessibility to community members with special needs.
Finally, a redesign of the backstage space will create a black box theatre for intimate performances and rehearsals, such as youth and education programs, smaller events, community accessibility and possibly a new cabaret program for live music.
Board president Mimi Kerley is thrilled at the possibilities this will bring to Kahilu and to the entire community.
“I’m grateful to see these much needed improvements and additions to our wonderful facility and I’m looking forward to all this will mean for the future of art and culture in Waimea and the entire Big Island community we serve. Special thanks to the support of State Senator Malama Solomon, State Representative Cindy Evans, and the entire Hawaii Island delegation.”
Kahilu Theatre will launch its 34th presenting season Aug. 11 with a free Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Design plans will be on display at the theater, which is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and during all shows.
