Aloha Performing Arts Company will be hold open auditions for volunteer actor readers at 6 p.m. July 6 and 7 for its 21st annual Original Play Festival at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. More than 40 roles are available in the seven plays which will be presented as staged readings Aug. 13 through 16.
The new, unproduced and unpublished plays selected for this year’s festival are listed in performance order. The festival kicks off Aug. 13, with a double bill: “Home Again,” an incestuous backwoods mystery by Edward Pickard, with seven characters, and “The Magic Uke,” a 10 character morality tale with music by Dennis McKenna of Hawi.
On Aug. 14 “By the Rivers of Babylon,” by David Greenberg will be presented. This is a 12 character historical drama centering around three generations of one Kentucky family being displaced by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Aug. 15 will feature a triple bill: “Missiles of Truth,” a two character vignette about a grandmother and grandson by John Holliday; “What to do About the Kids,” another two character playlet, by J. Jackson, concerning kids of a surprising kind; and “Next Wife,” a ghostly romantic comedy by Kona playwright Kitty Powell featuring six characters. On Aug. 16, Robert O. Davis’ “A Tiny Little Secret,” a comedy of errors, with a dead body as one of the nine characters, takes the stage. At 2:30 p.m. Aug. 17, a free public potluck celebration will be held onstage.
Auditions will consist primarily of readings from the scripts. Directors are still being finalized, and will be announced later. Those auditioning are asked to arrive on time and expect to stay approximately two hours. Attendance at both audition sessions is ideal, but not required. Each play will have five rehearsals, on the same evening of the week as its performance, beginning July 9. The festival features these plays in staged reading format, with simple technical presentation, and actors holding scripts. Therefore, memorization is not required.
