Frances M.D. Gulland presents “The Marine Mammal Center, Status and Trends of Hawaiian Monk Seal Population, and an Overview of Conservation Efforts” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Gateway Center at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
Gulland is a veterinarian and the senior scientist at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif. She has been actively involved in the veterinary care and rehabilitation of stranded marine mammals and research into marine mammal diseases there since 1994. Her interests include determining the impacts of human activities on marine mammal health, and how marine mammals can serve as indicators of ocean health.
Palace is site for fundraising event
The third annual Christmas at Hulihee Palace will take place Dec. 1. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person and limited special reserved tables are also available.
There will be a royal holiday dinner in honor of Queen Emma. Queen Emma, the wife of Alexander Liholiho, Kamehameha IV, was dedicated to the health and education of her people. Her legacy included the founding of Queen’s Hospital and St. Andrew’s Priory. She spent many years at HanaiakamAlama, her summer palace in Nuuanu that is now a museum operated by the Daughters of Hawaii. She also had a coffee farm in mauka Kona and entertained many guests at Hulihee Palace.
Live and silent auctions and entertainment by the Kealakehe Intermediate School Chorus and Ukulele Ensemble and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Hookena are planned.
Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii and used for ongoing restoration and preservation efforts at the palace.

Ministry seeks
items for Philippines
Holoholo Ministries is planning clothing and supplies drives to provide help to needy people in the Philippines.
The ministry is looking for gently used clothing appropriate for hot weather. Children’s clothes are in high demand but adult small and medium sizes are also needed.
Travel-size toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, stickers, temporary tattoos, pencils, aloha print T-shirts or aloha-themed gifts that can be big prizes are also needed for camps the ministry runs for needy children in the Philippines.

Veterans, military admitted free to fair
Veterans and military personnel with proper identification cards will have free gate admission to the Kona Farm Fair on Saturday. The Kona Farm Fair has designated this day as Veteran and Military Appreciation Day.
The Honokaa High School Jazz band will kick off events at Old Kona Airport Park pavilion at noon followed by an appreciation program from 1 to 2 p.m. and the job fair from 2 to 6 p.m.

with Harrison planned
Gavin Harrison leads walking meditation from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bond Homestead in Kapaau. The event begins with silent meditation, followed by an introduction to mindfulness and silent walking meditation. The walk is not strenuous and concludes with silent togetherness and refreshments. Participants should be prepared for variable weather conditions and bring a towel or cushion for rest stops in nature, water, mosquito repellent and a small hiking backpack if desired. “Awakening to the Deepest Truth of Who We Are: A Gathering with Gavin Harrison” is slated from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Waiaka Events Salon in Waimea. The event includes sitting and walking meditation, dialogue and inquiry. Experienced and beginning meditators are welcome and should bring a meditation cushion. chili contest
The Ka Makani football team of Hawaii Preparatory Academy has announced Chef Cary Peterson, owner of Kohala Burger and Taco and Kohala Coast Catering, the winner of the third annual Big Island Chef’s Chili Cook-Off.
Peterson’s chili, a no-bean recipe made with grass-fed Big Island beef, Iowa pork and jalapeno peppers, received the most votes from attendees at the school’s Oct. 21 Pumpkin Patch. Proceeds from the chili cook-off directly benefit the Ka Makani football team.

A job fair for veterans, active-duty military members, guard and reserve members and military spouses is slated from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Old Kona Airport Park. Free registration for employers and job seekers is available at hoh.greatjob.net.

Sirens tested today
The Civil Defense monthly test of the statewide outdoor siren warning system, coordinated with the test of the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. today.
The siren test is a steady one minute tone on all sirens. The steady tone is used to alert the public to any emergency that may pose a threat to life and property. Besides natural hazards, the Emergency Alert System could be used for terrorist incidents or acts of war.
Civil defense disaster information is located in the front section of telephone directories in all counties.
