Again this year there will be a haunted house at the bottom of Sea View Circle, open Halloween night from dark until around 9 p.m. — or when people stop showing up.
This is the 10th year of the haunted house, and promises to be the biggest haunt ever. We are asking, but not requiring, a donation of a nonperishable food item for the Foodbasket. Volunteers to assist with the scaring, and anyone wishing to volunteer can email time2dive@hawaii.rr.com

The Kona Pacific Public Charter School is holding its 12th annual Halloween Journey on Oct. 27 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Kona Pacific Public Charter School grounds above the Kona Community Hospital. Travel with Dorothy and Toto — the theme is “The Wizard of Oz.” Enjoy seven theatrical skits, games, a Kansas City barbecue, Waldorf-inspired crafts, a general store and more. Arc of Kona will have a pumpkin party Oct. 26 with crafts, pumpkin painting and carving contests, face painting and a turkey meal. On Oct. 31, there will be a haunted house, costume party, candy and crafts and a barbecue meal.

Mama’s House Thrift Shop and 12 Step Bookstore announces a new take on holiday shopping with the “Spooktacular Christmas Extravaganza” Oct. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Thelma Parker Gym in Waimea. Plus, as a gift to community members who send clothes to family off-island, Mama’s House is offering thousands of free clothing items for men, women and children.
“We have so much,” said Beth Mehau, executive director of Mama’s House umbrella nonprofit The Pantry. “Many people around the island send clothing items to their families in the Philippines, Guam, the Marshall Islands and elsewhere. We’d be thrilled to give it away and keep this volume out of our landfills.”
In addition to the clothing giveaway, Mama’s House will feature a wide array of some new and many gently used holiday items for sale—from Halloween costumes for children and adults, to Christmas decorations, holiday linens, lights, trees, toys and much more. There will also be a selection of island arts and crafts for one-of-a-kind gifts. (Crafters please call 887-2289).
At the “Spooktacular,” tickets will be available for Ledward Kaapana & Friends in concert — a fundraiser for the Ohana in the Arts at Waimea Artists’ Guild, Nov. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School. Admission; $15 for adult, $9 for youth 4-12, with keiki 3 and under are free, includes chili, rice, salad bar and beverages, a live concert and an arts market 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is an alcohol/drug free event, project of The Pantry dba Waimea Artists’ Guild.

Have your keiki put on their best costumes and join in the trick or treat fun from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 around the Waikoloa Village Association complex. Start at the Waikoloa Village Association office, then go to Banjy’s Paradise Bar and Grill, the Pro Shop, the Bookmobile and the association’s pool. Called “Tricks, Treats and Four Legged Feet,” the second annual North Hawaii Community Hospital Pet Blessing is a free event that honors our four legged, winged and finned friends, as well as expresses appreciation for the joy and companionship they provide. Bring your cat, dog, parakeet or hamster to North Hawaii Community Hospital’s front lawn, where a blessing will be conducted by Deacon Larry Ignacio from Annunciation Church. The event coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. Owners and pets are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. On Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m, the Kealakekua Public Library will present a Holiday Craft program for children 5 or older who are accompanied by a parent. Learn to make a holiday paper pumpkin. The Hawaii Island Humane Society is holding its annual Halloween pet walks Oct. 28 in Kona and Oct. 27 in Hilo. The walk encourages pet owners to exercise themselves and their pets during this fun, family-friendly free Halloween weekend event that includes contests and prizes. Walkers with or without pets are urged to raise pledges to support Hawaii Island Humane Society. Registration is free and begins at 8 a.m.; Walk begins at 9 a.m. Free to the public. West Hawaii Dance Academy Students will perform selections from its recent production of “Alice In Wonderland” at 3:30 p.m. at the Hilton Waikoloa Ballroom Oct. 27.
The performance will feature characters from “Alice,” including the Dancing Flowers, The White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts, Black Cards, Happy Hatters, The Red and White Roses, Cupcakes, and the Flamingoes.
This performance is in celebration of the Hilton Waikoloa’s “West Hawaii Ohana Expo.” The event showcases businesses and crafters from the Big Island. Activities include a Halloween costume contest, baby crawling contest, games for the keiki, crafts, exhibits, food, entertainment and a “haunted canal boat ride.”

Join Parker School for a night full of tricks and treats Oct. 27 as it celebrates the spirit of Halloween from 3 to 6 p.m. Bring your cute little goblins for a ghostly gathering of spooktacular food, activities and ghost stories that will frightfully delight you.

Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ohana Association invites families to its 21st annual Pumpkin Patch Festival on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This festival, located on HPA’s Upper Campus at the corner of Kohala Mountain Road and Kawaihae Road in Waimea, continues to be one of the favorite events of the year. With free entry and parking, this year’s event features a huge pumpkin patch with more than 500 pumpkins, games and prizes, food booths, a silent auction and great live entertainment.
The silent auction will include special trips, gift items, fabulous collectibles, rounds of golf, fine dining, resort stays, island adventures, a variety of art, gift baskets and more. The auction closes promptly at 2 p.m.
Live, free entertainment will be featured throughout the day. Spectators will enjoy performances by Lorenzo’s Army, Honokaa High School Jazz Band and Te Ea O Te Turama Tahitian Dance and HPA student performances. Tommy “Kahikina” Ching will be the emcee.
Games and activities for all ages, toddler to teen will be available, inlcuding the climbing wall, party bouncers, horseback rides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a fishing booth, face painting, dunking booth, train rides, haunted house and lele-kine bungee trampoline.
Food booths will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, Caesar salad, nachos, caramel apples and kettle corn along with lau lau, shoyu chicken and Asian fare. The Ka Makani football team is hosting a chili cook-off with several renowned, local chefs participating

Bring the entire ohana to New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship’s gymnasium from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and enjoy games, face painting, food and candy.
