Planned Parenthood gets national award
The Planned Parenthood of Hawaii education and training team was recently honored with the 2012 Association of Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education Orchard Award. This award is given to educators that have risen to the occasion and serve as models of excellence for other organizations.
The Hawaii education and training team provides evidence-based, age-appropriate sexual health education throughout Hawaii. Members work in schools and partner with community organizations to help ensure Hawaii’s families have access to important information about sexual health. Notably, during the past year the team has worked with the University of Hawaii Centers on Disability Studies to create a culturally responsive sexual health curriculum for Hawaii’s diverse youth population. The new program, Pono Choices, uses Native Hawaiian cultural practices, activities and values to promote a connection to self and community while providing information and tools to help young people make healthy choices for the future.
