A 49-year-old Volcano man is facing firearms- and drug-related charges after police reportedly located ammunition and drugs while executing a search warrant for an explosive device at a Mauna Loa Estates home on Sunday.
Keith Kapena Hulihee was charged on Monday with four counts of owning or possessing ammunition when prohibited because of a prior felony conviction and one count each third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $120,000.
The charges stem from a Sunday night incident in which police responded to the home after receiving reports of shots being fired in the area, according to police. Hulihee reportedly informed police that he had an explosive device in his possession and wanted to turn it over to police. Officers subsequently located an item believed to be an explosive device and evacuated nearby residents.
Hulihee was taken into custody and held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation. No one was injured.
A U.S. Marines explosive ordnance disposal team later determined the device was a military gas canister that did not pose any danger.
Detectives did not find any explosive devices on the property during the execution of a search warrant, but did reportedly locate ammunition and drugs.
