Parker School has launched its iPad Initiative. All students in sixth through 12th grades will use the interactive tablets for everything from content creation to instant teacher feedback and video mirroring — students can view on their iPads what the teacher is looking at, and vice versa — all with the tap of a finger.
The 2012-13 school year will serve as a pilot year for teachers and administrators to familiarize themselves with the iPad, to research and test the best educational apps and to design enhanced learning opportunities for students.
Parker Lower School students will also experience learning with iPads beginning this year. One set of iPads is earmarked for use in grades 4 and 5, and another set will be available to all students this fall.
Another part of Parker’s technological push, the First Hawaiian Bank Media Studio, opened to middle and upper school students this fall. At the studio, students will have access to powerful laptops as well as audio, video and photography equipment. The center’s video conferencing equipment will also provide professional development opportunities for faculty and staff and eventually open up off-campus learning opportunities for students.
UH center offers
oral interpretation
Lecturer Ann Kern will direct Oral Interpretation of Literature, Speech Communication 231, at the University of Hawaii Center-West Hawaii during the fall semester, which begins Monday. Only scheduled occasionally at the Kealakekua campus, this three-credit humanities course studies literature through performance.
Oral interpretation asks students to embody their chosen literature, using vocal and physical techniques.

Club awards 3 scholarships
Kuakini Hawaiian Civic Club of Kona has awarded three $500 scholarships to Hawaii Island students. The recipients are Christel Denzler, Jud Michael Regis and Krystal-Lei Mills.
The annual scholarships are awarded for excellence of grades, extracurricular activities and civic volunteer service.
Parker School lists
new board members
John Roth and Carolyn Stewart joined the Parker School board of directors in July.
Roth is an attorney with the Robert W. Hastings law firm in Waimea, and currently serves as president of the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawaii State Bar Association and was president of the Rotary Club of North Hawaii for 2011-12. He also is an adjunct professor at the William S. Richardson School of Law and recently co-authored the Hawaii law section of a publication for the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
Stewart has lived in Hawaii since 1990 and in Waimea since 1996. Her son, Jesse Tarnas, is a 2012 graduate of Parker School and daughter, Maia Tarnas, is a sophomore at Parker. Stewart is a principal consultant with Marine and Coastal Solutions International Inc., a Hawaii-based environmental resources management planning firm. She also works for an independent college counseling company based in Waimea. She is actively involved in several organizations focused on the betterment of the community and environment.
Kealakehe High sets open house for Aug. 23
Kealakehe High School’s annual open house will begin at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in the cafeteria.
After a brief welcome, parents will follow their student’s schedule, spending 10 minutes in each class. This time with teachers is not for conferencing; parents may request an appointment if they wish. Help will be available to parents who do not have their child’s schedule.
A light dinner and beverages will be available as a school fundraiser. Resource tables will be set up with information about college readiness, migrant education, the travel club, the Spirit of Aloha Program, the Malie Learning Center, athletics and general school information.

Honokaa open house slated for Tuesday
Honokaa High and Intermediate School will hold an open house from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The event will include displays showcasing programs and activities on campus and an opportunity for parents to visit their child’s classroom and meet the teachers.
Entertainment will be provided and dinner will be served.
