A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. will examine next month all aspects of the Hawaii Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services — part of the final step to achieve accreditation.
The team is arriving Aug. 4. Its verification, stating the department meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards, is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation — a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said.
As part of the on-site assessment, department personnel and the public may offer comments at an informational session from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6. The session will be held in the county building’s Puna conference room located at 25 Aupuni Street, Suite 1501, in Hilo.
Telephone comments will also be accepted by calling 961-2270 on Aug. 6 between 1 and 3 p.m. All comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the department’s ability to comply with the commission’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the South Hilo station, at 349 Kapiolani Street in Hilo or by calling Lt. Kenneth Bugado Jr. at 961-2260.
