Scattered heavy showers in Kailua-Kona have prompted a flood advisory for the Big Island. The advisory remains in effect until 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.
At 7:36 p.m., radar showed the showers falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour in the Kailua-Kona area, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Other locations included in the advisory were Keahole Point, Keauhou and Captain Cook. The advisory may be extended beyond 9:45 p.m. should the heavy showers persist.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
