A man was hospitalized Wednesday after the vehicle he was driving on Mamalahoa Highway veered off the roadway and down an embankment into a North Kona lava field.
The man was operating the gold-colored four-door sedan and heading toward Waimea on the highway around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday when he apparently crossed the center line and veered off the roadway, according to the Hawaii Police and Fire departments. There were no passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, which was located between mile markers 28 and 27, on the Waimea side of the scenic point.
After leaving the roadway, the vehicle went down a 20-foot embankment before coming to a rest on its roof and leaning against an ohia tree in a lava field.
The man was transported in “somewhat serious, but stable” condition to Kona Community Hospital, according to the fire department.
