The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits through 6 p.m. today.
The service forecast 35 to 45 mph easterly winds with gusts reaching 65 mph for elevations above 8,000 feet. The service cautioned motorists and hikers to avoid travel until the winds subside.
The service also issued a wind advisory for the entire island through 6 p.m. Thursday with 15 to 30 mph easterly winds with gusts up to 55 mph forecast. Areas specifically noted in the forecast were Kailua-Kona, Milolii, South Point, Pahala, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Waimea, Waikoloa and Saddle Road above the 5,000-foot elevation.
A high wind advisory means that winds of at least 30 mph and gusts over 50 mph are forecast, according to the service. A high wind warning means winds with sustained speeds of at least 40 mph and gusts of 58 mph or more.
