Big Island police are investigating the death of a 63-year-old bicyclist found Thursday along Queen Kaahumanu Highway, near the Kiholo Bay scenic lookout.
The identity of the man, whom the Hawaii Police Department said was a Kailua-Kona resident, is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Police responded around 9:30 a.m. to the scenic lookout to a report of a male bicyclist down on the side of the highway, near mile marker 82, according to the department. Witnesses told police the bicyclist fell behind a group of other riders and was later found unresponsive, lying on the side of the highway.
The man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he died at 10:40 a.m., according to the department.
Preliminary findings showed no sign the man was struck by a vehicle, according to the department. The bicyclist also showed no signs of serious injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with incident and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
