Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from June 9 through Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, according to police.
So far this year, there have been 568 DUI arrests compared with 595 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.5 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
South Hilo officers arrested nine motorists while Kona officers arrested five and South Kohala officers four, according to the department. Puna officers arrested three drivers. North Hilo and North Kohala officers arrested one motorist in each district.
There have been 710 major accidents so far this year compared with 640 during the same period last year, an increase of 11 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.1 percent.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two fatalities to combination of both drugs and alcohol, according to police.
