A 20-year-old Hilo man died Wednesday after his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck in Hilo.
The man was apparently riding a bicycle southbound on Kinoole Street around 7:30 a.m. when a southbound 2005 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck reportedly struck him just south of Ohea Street, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The truck, driven by a 40-year-old Volcano woman, then struck a utility pole, severing it.
The woman reportedly then fled the scene, traveling south on Kinoole Street before an off-duty police officer stopped her at Palai Street, according to police.
She was then arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, driving under the influence of an intoxicant and other traffic offenses. West Hawaii Today is not identifying the woman as she had not been charged with a crime as of press time.
Fire rescue personnel took the man to Hilo Medical Center where he died at 8:16 a.m., according to police. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending positive identification, according to police.
This is the 10th fatality on Big Island public roads this year compared with seven at this time in 2011.
