All-breed dog show slated for next weekend
The Orchid Island Dog Fancier Club Inc. is celebrating its 100th American Kennel Club-sanctioned all-breed show on the Big Island. The occasion takes place Saturday throught Feb. 20 at the Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo. This is one of two AKC-cluster shows held on the Big Island each year — the second cluster being held in October.
The club was founded in 1973 and is a nonprofit organization that promotes the sport of purebred dogs and responsible pet ownership through various activities and training classes offered throughout the year. In recent years, more than 150 dogs representing 50 breeds have entered at this event with many participants traveling from outer islands — all competing for the “Best In Show” title.
This year, the Saturday event will mark the club’s 100th AKC all-breed dog show. A special “Parade of Title Holders” for any dog holding an AKC title that competed at these events over years past will be added, as well as additional entries for the “Best Puppy In Show.”
