Stanley Steemer opens on Big Island
Stanley Steemer, a national carpet care business, has established a franchise on the Island of Hawaii, and its signature bright yellow vans are traveling around the Big Island servicing homes and businesses.
Charlotte Rinehart, the Big Island franchise owner, invites island residents to call Stanley Steemer at 329-9329.
Rinehart has been with Stanley Steemer for 16 years and is also part-owner of a franchise in New Orleans, La. “We provide all the extras, at no extra costs,” she said. The Stanley Steemer extras include a free estimate of services, an analysis of a customer’s carpet, special attention to spots, traffic areas and other problems, thorough cleaning along baseboards, moving of furniture and returning furniture to original locations and placements of carpet and furniture protectors under furniture legs.”
In addition to carpet cleaning — which includes area and oriental rugs — the company offers deodorizing, spot removal, and carpet and upholstery protection using environmentally-friendly products. Tile and grout cleaning for outside as well as inside areas is also available.
Hawaii Forest & Trail wins ecotourism award
Hawaii Forest & Trail, a nature adventure tout company, has been named the recipient of the 2006 Operator of the Year Award from the Hawaii Ecotourism Association.
The Hawaii Ecotourism Association annually honors a member who best exemplifies an exceptional ecotourism operation. “Hawaii Forest & Trail has been the leader in the development of ecotourism in Hawaii and sets a stellar example for other ecotourism operations statewide,” said Annette Kaohelaulii, the past-president of HEA.
Hawaii Forest & Trail is owned by Rob and Cindy Pacheco, who founded the company in 1993 with just one van. The company currently has 35 employees and 13 vehicles and takes guests on eight different small-group tours to experience a variety of natural and remote areas around the Big Island, including waterfalls, mountain summits, volcanic landscapes and pristine valleys as well as on birdwatching trips to intact native areas.
The company will receive the Ecotour Operator of the Year award at a special HEA luncheon in Honolulu on Friday, in honor of Earth Day.
SBDC and SBA presenting workshop
Hawaii Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) present a free “SBA 8(a) Application Workshop” from 9-11 a.m. April 26 at the Kona mayor’s office, conference room 103.
Small business owners will be introduced to the 8 (a) application process and how government agencies utilize 8 (a) participants for government contracting opportunities. Participants will also learn about other SBA contracting certification programs and how these programs may benefit your small business.

Headache clinic opening in Kona area
Kahaluu Bay Medical Clinic is opening a specialty clinic for the treatment of headaches.
Dr. Judy Emanuel, D.O., a board certified physician, will teach a technique that will significantly reduce or completely eliminate headaches.
Emanuel has suffered with migraine headaches for a number of years and has now come to a place of relative comfort. She has found that her technique can be easily learned and practiced on a daily basis.
Western medicine, including medication is given when indicated, but will be needed much less often, if at all, Emanuel said.

Fruit growers’ group meets on Saturday
The next West Hawaii chapter meeting of the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers is at 9 a.m. Saturday at the 12 Trees Project site towards the bottom of Napoopoo road next to the Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative.
Attendees are asked to bring tools and assist in preparing the site for final landscaping. They will also be able to learn how to operate a tractor. Members will be able to make air layers of some of the project fruit trees and be able to purchase others at substantial discount.
Refreshments will be provided.
