Child care training begins this month
The population of West Hawaii is growing and so is the need for quality child care. People Attentative to Children endeavors to support Hawaii’s child care needs by offering training to people interested in providing care for children.
The basic training series will be offered for anyone interested in starting a child care business in their home. Participants will learn about the role of the provider as an important factor in the early education field, in family life, in the work force and in the community.
“Introduction to Family Child Care” will be held in Kona on Jan. 10 and in Waimea on Jan. 23. The series consists of classes with topics covering bookkeeping, child development and guidance, setting up the child care environment and how children learn best through play. There is no fee, however, registration is required in advance. Space is limited, call 325-3800.

Farmers market continues in Waimea
Starting 2007 with a bang, “First Saturday” at the Waimea Hawaiian Homestead Market offers a variety of items.
“Part time” vendors will set up shop from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in addition to the weekly vendors of vegetables, fruits, plants, flowers and prepared food items that are available each week at this community farmers’ market.
One “part-time” vendor is Kahua Ranch of North Kohala, offering forage finished beef and lamb in a variety of cuts. All the beef and lamb, grown at the 3,200-foot level, is hormone and antibiotic free and finished on the 8,000 acres of pasture land of Kahua Ranch.
January’s “First Saturday” will also bring Chef Piet Wigman of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to the market. At 8:30 a.m., Wigman will cook up a couple of simple dishes, designed for home cooks, using Big Island grown products.
Each week shoppers find a wide array of freshly harvested vegetables and fruit, cut flowers and plants, baked goods, prepared foods and snacks, jams, jellies and other preserves.
