Tax law changes to be discussed Thursday
The Hawaii Island Economic Development Board, Friends of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority and the High Technology Development Corporation are sponsoring a presentation by Kurt Kawafuchi, director of the state Department of Taxation, from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hawaii Gateway Center at NELHA.
Kawafuchi will present information on new energy initiatives. The goal of this program is to give investors, businesses and others involved in new energy and ocean science technology to hear first hand how the tax department will interpret changes to Act 221 embodied in Act 215.
Act 221 has helped create more than 1,000 jobs and resulted in significant funding for Hawaii companies since its enactment in 2001. The law was extended until 2010, and several modifications were made to address issues raised by critics of the program. The goal of this meeting is to make sure policies and procedures are clearly understood, eliminating the uncertainty about the law for qualified companies and their investors.
Registration is at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for HIEDB, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, HTDC and NELHA members; $25 for nonmembers. Checks and cash will be accepted at the door.

Authors are visiting Kona Stories in June
Local authors Mia King and Darrin Gee will visit Kona Stories for a book signing beginning at 1 p.m. June 2.
King will sign copies of her debut novel, “Good Things,” (Berkley/Penguin) and answers questions on publication and writing. She’ll also give a sneak peek to her next novel, “The Aloha Diaries,” which hits shelves in August 2008. She’ll be joined by Gee, her husband, author of “The Seven Principles of Golf,” which debuted at No. 17 nationwide of all sports titles.
On June 9, Craig Elevitch, author of “Traditional Trees of Pacific Islands,” as well as books on koa, noni and agroforestry, will answer tree, gardening and farming questions from 1 to 3 p.m.
Keiki Storytime for preschoolers is at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Keiki can color and hear stories while parents have coffee and pastries on the lanai.

Dream-Board workshop coming to Waikoloa
The Dream-Board workshop will be held 3 to 7 p.m. June 2 in Waikoloa. This workshop will explore the possibilities life has to offer.
