Hawaii Radiologic adds digital mammography
Hawaii Radiologic Associates has the latest in digital mammography technology now available at its Kona facility. With the installation of Fuji’s Computed Radiography for Mammography system, Hawaii Radiologic Associates is now one of the first breast imaging facilities in the U.S. to offer this digital mammography capability.
Digital mammography, a mammogram that uses new detection technologies and computers instead of film, was found in a landmark clinical study of more than 42,000 women to be better than film-screen mammography in detecting breast cancer in three groups: women under 50, pre- and post-menopausal women and women with dense breasts. Digital mammograms are 15 percent more accurate among women under age 50 or not yet in menopause and 11 percent more accurate among women with dense breasts.
From the patient’s perspective, the procedure for a digital mammogram is the same as for a conventional film mammogram; however, the images are available almost immediately and no film development time is necessary.
Hawaii Radiologic Associates also announces the installation of a 16-slice Toshiba Aquilion CT Scanner at its Kona facility. Same day walk-in appointments are available with a physician’s requisition.

Vendors sought for bamboo show
The Hawaii Chapter of the American Bamboo Society invites the public to its 2007 show and sale from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Kona Imin Center in Holualoa.
Vendors who would like to have a table at the show and sale or who would like to donate plants or merchandise to the chapter can contact Paul at 443-7401 for more details by Wednesday.
The show and sale is a fundraiser for the chapter and will feature presentations on bamboo by local experts. Bamboo plants, books, crafts, clothing and other bamboo-related products will be available for sale from local merchants and individuals.
Fruit growers meeting on Wednesday
A special dinner meeting of the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers-West Hawaii will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hong Kong Chop Suey in the Kealakekua Ranch. Cost for members will be $12 and $17 for nonmembers. For reservations, contact Ken Love at kenlove@kona.net as space is limited.
The meeting will feature presentations by Dr. Roberto Coronel from the University of the Philippines and agriculturist Angelito Carpio. Coronel is one of the world’s leading experts on all facets of growing tropical fruit. His text and reference books on tropical agriculture are used worldwide. When he was last here in 1991 he helped to identify a number of unusual varieties of fruit trees.

Wellness travel is conference focus
The Hawaii Island Wellness Travel Association, in conjunction with Hawaii County and the Big Island Visitors Bureau, presents a one-day educational conference on “Packaging and Promoting Wellness Travel.” The event, slated for 2 to 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Fairmont Orchid, is open to the public and all travel- and health-related professionals.
