Enjoying Hawaii’s ocean sports can be a challenge for those with mobility issues. According to the Parks and Recreation Department, the number one inquiry from visitors is “Are the beaches accessible?” A new online service, “Disabled Adventures Hawaii,” offers solutions to those who struggle with managing sandy beaches and other physical obstacles.
Jean Hartley, a 20-year Kona resident and polio survivor, knows too well the barriers to full access to our ocean and land sports. But public education is turning that around and the evidence lies on Jean’s Web site www.disabledadventureshawaii.com.
Fifteen charter-member businesses assure disabled clients a safe, do-able and memorable water, land or air adventure. The service is free to the client who connects online to view and book their Kona coast options. The Web site also offers an island map marking departure locations, helpful transportation tips (don’t miss the “Beach Access Wheelchair”), profiles of remarkable disabled athletes and useful local resources.
