Foodland opening new gourmet market Saturday
Foodland Super Market Ltd.’s new grocery store, Foodland Farms, will open at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Shops at Mauna Lani. The new 8,000-square-foot store will offer residents and visitors a wide selection of island grown, specialty, gourmet, natural, organic and traditional favorites from Hawaii, as well as many varieties from around the world. The full service supermarket will include a bakery, deli, meat, seafood and produce departments, as well as a coffee bar featuring Foodland Farms’ signature blend of Kona espresso roast coffee.
“We are excited to open Foodland Farms to serve residents and visitors in this growing area of the Big Island,” said Jenai S. Wall, Foodland chairman and CEO. “Our new specialty market is a place where customers will discover fresh, prepared foods, along with their favorite grocery items — all in a convenient location with excellent service. Here, you’ll find everything from imported Italian cheese to Big Island tomatoes to organic chicken and of course, Oreos.”
Island produce and local products will be featured throughout the store. In addition, a variety of fast and convenient meal solutions, ready-to-eat entrees and fresh, made-to-order specialties will be presented. Many of the items in the store will be available on opening day, but others including liquor, fine wines and spirits, and some unique specialty items will not be available until January.
The public also is invited to attend a grand opening party to celebrate the opening of Foodland Farms from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17. The event will benefit the Big Island’s Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Attendees will have a chance to tour the store and sample specialties from every department; enjoy fine wines and spirits and participate in educational wine-tasting; sample appetizers made by Foodland’s team of chefs; listen to entertainment and have the chance to win prizes throughout the evening. Tickets to the event cost $20 or $25 at the door. All proceeds from ticket sales and a portion of proceeds from grocery sales during the event will go to the Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

Kona Brewing brews 3,000 batch of beer
Kona Brewing Co. brewed its 3,000th batch of beer Wednesday at its Kailua-Kona brewery since the company’s beginnings in 1994. The brew will be a Belgian-style tripel.
Tripels are brewed with much greater amounts of malt and sugar, resulting in beer that is three times the strength of standard Belgian-style ales. They are typically bright gold in color with complex, spicy aroma and flavor. Kona Brewing Co.’s tripel was brewed using 200 pounds of local Maui brand turbinado sugar, which will contribute additional flavor and strength to the beer. The brew staff chose the tripel beer style to commemorate the “triple-thousand” brew. After a period of fermentation and conditioning, Kona Brewing Co.’s tripel will be served up exclusively at its two restaurant locations on the Big Island and Oahu beginning in February.
Bank of Hawaii reopens historic Kohala branch
Bank of Hawaii celebrated the reopening of its historic branch facility in Kohala (Kapaau) on the Big Island Monday with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. The branch had been severely damaged in the October 2006 earthquake and was closed for structural renovations. In the interim, the bank met the financial service needs of the community via a large mobile trailer outfitted with teller stations and ATMs.
The original building was constructed around 1900. Bank of Hawaii purchased the building in 1922. The branch opened for business on Dec. 1, 1922, and has served the community since that time.
As part of the new design, a photovoltaic system has been installed, which makes the building energy self-sufficient. The new system and roof panels were installed by Hoku Scientific. Over its lifetime, Hoku Scientific estimates that the system will produce equivalent electricity to power 50 homes for one year.
