The next meeting of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 21 at the University of Hawaii experiment station in Kainaliu across from the Aloha Theatre. Nonmembers are welcome to attend.
The meeting will feature talks from L. Mike Klungness, of the University of Hawaii Plant and Protection Sciences program, and a guest from the Big Island Beekeepers, who will look at the bees; impact on the fruit industry and varroa mite control. There will be short presentations on the importance of honey bee pollination in essential crops; the decline in pollination effectiveness due to high mortality rates in honey bee colonies, especially feral colonies; professional bee management for pollination services; and the option of pesticide or pesticide-free honey bee colonies.

Adyani selected as pub general manager
Kona Brewing Co. has selected Steven Adyani to be its Kailua-Kona pub general manager.
Adyani has more than 17 years of management experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Most recently, he served as chief operations officer at Arancino Restaurant Group in Honolulu. Prior to that he held various management positions at well-known establishments, including Prime Restaurant Concepts, The Cheesecake Factory and Trattoria Restaurant. Adyani holds a master’s degree in hospitality management and a bachelor’s degree in marketing, both from the University of Rome, Italy.
Ex-lawyer admits guilt in insider trading case
NEW YORK — A former attorney pleaded guilty Thursday to securities fraud, admitting a role in a $53 million insider trading case already brought against 20 others, including one of America’s richest men.
Brien Santarlas, 33, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. His lawyer, Robert Stahl, said he is cooperating with authorities. Santarlas is the third lawyer charged in a case a prosecutors said in October is the largest hedge fund insider trading scheme ever prosecuted.
The Hoboken, N.J., resident was the sixth of 21 Wall Street professionals charged in the case to plead guilty to charges and cooperate with the government.
Among those charged is billionnaire Galleon Group founder and hedge fund operator Raj Rajaratnam. In court papers, Rajaratnam’s lawyers have said Rajaratnam did not cheat to earn profits in securities and the government misled a judge to obtain wiretaps.
Santarlas said he gleaned inside information about pending mergers and acquisitions from computers at Ropes & Gray LLP, an international law firm where he worked. He said he also eavesdropped on secret conversations and asked unwitting colleagues questions about deals.
