A small craft advisory is in effect for Big Island waters, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu.
The advisory lasts until 6 a.m. Saturday for southeast and leeward waters, as well as the Alenuihaha Channel, according to the service.
Forecasters are calling for east winds up to 25 knots — or about 29 mph — and rough seas of 5 to 9 feet, according to the service. An area of high pressure far northeast of the islands is producing strong trade winds over typically windy areas of Maui and the Big Island.
A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 25 knots to 33 knots and/or seas of 10 feet or greater are expected to produce conditions hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these conditions, according to the service.
