NORTH KOHALA — Macadamia nut trees fill thousands of acres on the Big Island. Although the nuts have a shell so hard it takes a pressure of more than 300 pounds per square inch to crack it, locals see the value in the soft buttery delicacy.
Because it’s one of the most profitable crops on the Big Island, mac nut growers in North Kohala met June 15 at the Kohala Village Hub to get better acquainted and learn from experts and each other.
The gathering was organized and facilitated by Duane Charlton, a mac nut farmer and the North Kohala representative for the Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association (HMNA).
More than a dozen local mac nut farmers came together for the group’s initial meeting, some who have grown them for years and others new to the trade. Discussions focused on HMNA benefits and the purpose of a regional sector. Russell Galanti, from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, gave an informative presentation on mac nut soil, leaf sampling and analysis.
In addition to formal presentations, discussion topics included types of mulch, the use of Roundup and little fire ants. The group plans to meet on a quarterly basis moving forward.
“My hope is that the North Kohala growing community will meet on a regular basis to ensure that all of us are receiving the most current information in regards to macadamia nut growing,” Charlton said.
Responses from participants were very positive.
“As someone who is new to macadamia nut farming, I found the meeting to be quite informative,” said resident Diann Wilson. “In addition to learning about soil sampling and fertilizing options, I was able to connect with other growers who were willing to share their expertise.”
In addition to the regional group, HMNA is holding their 50th annual meeting July 8 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo. To register, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/hawaii-macadamia-nut-association-annual-meeting-tickets-33403190843.
