The University of Hawaii expects to realize approximately “$100,000-plus” from the Los Angeles Clippers’ stay on its campus this fall, athletic director David Matlin said.
The Clippers are scheduled to spend eight days in Manoa, Sept. 26 to Oct.3, between their training camp and Oct. 1 and 3 exhibition games against the Toronto Raptors at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The games are being billed as the “Clippers Hawaii Classic Presented by Kaiser Permanente.”
The Clippers will also participate in a “Fan Fest’ at the Hawaii Convention Center as part of their agreement with the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
According to terms of the UH contract, the Clippers will pay the athletic department $2,000 a day for use of the school’s facilities, plus expenses.
In addition, UH will receive “10 percent of the adjusted gross ticket sales,” as well as operating and ticketing expenses, according to the contract.
UH retains the concession and parking rights. The athletic department receives a share of concession sales but does not share in parking revenue, which goes to the campus.
This is the first year of an agreement with the HTA to bring the Clippers to Honolulu, though there is an option for future years. “We would love to partner with them going forward,” Matlin said in a text. “Nothing definitive yet.”
The Clippers fill a void left by the departure of the Lakers, who held their training camp here 13 times between 1988 and 2015.
Tickets for the exhibition games are scheduled to go on sale today at 9 a.m. at www.etickethawaii.com or by calling 956-4482. They are expected to run $20 to $250.
