Tree trimming to force lane closures Monday in Honalo
Hawaii County Department of Public Works Highway Maintenance Division crews will assist Hawaiian Telcom with the removal of vegetation from cable lines on Monday along Mamalahoa Highway in Honalo, according to the Hawaii County Department of Public Works. Hawaiian Telcom will also replace several cable lines at the same time.
Alternating lane closures will be in effect while crews are performing work between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the county. Motorists are advised to use the Mamalahoa bypass via Halekii Street and Alii Drive.
Lane closure at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Alternating lane closures will be in effect on Crater Rim Drive within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park starting on Monday.
The westbound lane fronting Steam Vents will be closed for up to 10 weeks while crews replace 3,000 feet of a deteriorated water main, according to the Natioanl Park Service. The pipeline supplies water to Jaggar Museum and the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaii Volcano Observatory.
Both lanes will be open when no active construction is occurring, according ot the park service. Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Wait times are expected to be less than 15 minutes.

around Hawaii Island
Alternating single lane closures will be in effect on Mamalahoa Highway, between Uluoa Street and Old Kona Village Road, in North Kona for sign installation, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Alternating single lane closures will also be in effect on Volcano Road, between mile markers 8.6 and 13.4, in the vicinity of Keaau to Mountain View for pavement reconstruction, according to the department.
Alternating single lane closures will also be in effect on Hawaii Belt Road, also known as Route 19, between mile markers 28 and 29, in the vicinity of Kaawalii Gulch, in North Hilo for roadway improvement work, according to the department.
Crews will be working from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, according to the department.
Alternating single lane closures remain in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Umauma Stream Bridge on Hawaii Belt Road, near mile marker 16 in Hakalau, for bridge repairs, according to the department. Vehicle weight is limited to 25 mph and the speed limit over the bridge is 25 mph. Vehicles weighing 25 tons or greater must use Kuniho Road, Old Mamalahoa Highway and Leopolino Road as a detour route.

in better fiscal shape
HONOLULU — Gov. Neil Abercrombie said Hawaii ended the most recent fiscal year $844 million in the black.
The governor said in a statement Friday the administration has worked diligently to stabilize and grow Hawaii’s economy.
He said additional state revenues and a positive economic outlook put the state in a better situation to address issues like early education, environmental protection, homelessness and support for seniors.
Hawaii’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
Hawaii Health Connector
signs up 574 people
HONOLULU — Hawaii’s insurance exchange has enrolled just 574 people since it launched in October.
This a little more than double the 257 who signed up during Hawaii Health Connector’s first month of open enrollment.
Hawaii News Now reported that the exchange announced the figure at a board of directors meeting at the state Capitol on Friday.
One primary purpose of the board meeting was to introduce Interim Executive Director Tom Matsuda. Matsuda is taking over from Coral Andrews, who resigned.
The exchange was scheduled to start open enrollment on Oct. 1, but software problems forced a two-week delay.
The exchange has said nearly 90,000 uninsured Hawaii residents are eligible for coverage under the marketplace.
