U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono on Tuesday announced plans to undergo treatment for kidney cancer.
Hirono, in a prepared statement, said her doctor discovered an abnormality on her chest x-ray during a routine pre-operative physical for eye surgery. After a series of follow up tests, Hirono was diagnosed with kidney cancer that is also present in her seventh rib.
Hirono said she planned to continue working during her recovery, and looks “forward to returning to the Senate as soon as possible.
“I face this fight with the same determination I’ve fought for the people of Hawaii. And I never quit, especially when things get tough,” Hirono said.
Hirono’s treatment is being overseen by kidney cancer specialists in the country at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital who have designed a comprehensive treatment plan that includes surgery to remove her right kidney and the lesion on her rib.
She said doctors expect she will make a full recovery from these treatments.
