HONOLULU — Website problems are being blamed for lower turnout at the Pacific Aviation Museum in Pearl Harbor.
The museum’s Executive Director Ken DeHoff Jr. told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that a reservations website says tickets are sold out even though tickets are available in person.
Ticket sales at the Aviation Museum were down 20 percent in the first quarter, compared with the same time frame last year, DeHoff said.
Other attractions in Pearl Harbor including the USS Arizona Memorial also appear to be sold out online. The Aviation Museum depends on spillover traffic from the Arizona, where admissions are free, but visitors must have a ticket. About 4,500 tickets are issued daily, and about half of them are sold online for a $1.50 fee, DeHoff said.
“What they don’t know is another 2,200 tickets (a day) are available,” DeHoff said. “We’re finding people aren’t coming.”
DeHoff suspects tour companies are scooping up the tickets, which are available for groups as large as 65 people and sold up to six months in advance.
He said he has asked for the website recreation.gov to be changed, but that will take time, because the request is competing with those from other locations.
