HI-PAL boxing
The Hawaii Police Department has announced the return of the HI-PAL boxing program for boys and girls ages 8-17 in West Hawaii. The first event will take place on Feb. 25 in Hisaoka Gym at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau.

Hospice of Kona Love 2 Fish Tourney
The 11th annual Love 2 Fish tournament, presented by Hospice of Kona has been rescheduled for Feb. 25. The tourney is limited to just 100 boats, and after a day of fishing, there will be a dinner and silent auction. Monetary prizes will be awarded in the following categories: marlin, ahi, mahi-mahi and ono, as well as in a special “couples division.”
Registration is $250 ($150 is donated to Hospice of Kona, $100 in cash goes to the tournament cash prize pool) and entrants can sign up directly at Honokohau Harbor’s Charter Desk or by calling the Charter Desk at 329-5735.

Kai Opua Canoe Club
Interested in paddling in an outrigger canoe? Come down to Kamakahonu Beach at the Kailua Pier for a short instructional session and paddle in Kailua Bay. No experience in necessary but paddlers must know how to swim. Kai Opua is looking for kids, novice, competitive and recreational paddlers.

Keauhou Canoe Club
Practice for the 2017 regatta season is beginning at the Keauhou Canoe Club. The men’s division is currently practicing on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. Women will begin on Feb. 22 and will practice on Monday and Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. Youth paddlers (12-18 years old) will start Feb. 27 and practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 3:30 p.m. Special Events (6-11 years old) and Special Olympic paddlers will begin March 2 and practice on Tuesday and Thursday at 3 p.m.

Department of Parks and Recreation Kona District
Basketball Development Training Program: A basketball development training program will be held at Kekuaokalani Gym at Old Airport Park on Feb. 26, March 4, 11 and 26 for kids ages 10-and-up. This is an advanced, year round program and previous experience is preferred. Cheyenne Meyer, Eddie “Piki” Heyward, Lawrence Kauka, Rory Cabatbat and James “Nish” Nishimura will instruct the program. Practice sessions last from 9:30-11:45 a.m. For more information call 327-3553.
Age Group basketball registration: The Department of Parks and Recreation is now accepting registration for age group basketball for kids ages 9-14. Registration forms can be picked up at Kekuaokalani Gym Monday-Thursday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. League play is scheduled to start March 16. Coaches meeting for Age Group Baseball: The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a coaches meeting at Kekuaokalani Gym on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the upcoming season and league rules. Konawaena FFA Golf Tourney Fundraiser
The first Konawaena Future Farmers of America Golf Tournament will be held on March 18 at the Big Island Country Club. The entry fee for the 2-person scramble event is $120 per person and includes golf, breakfast, pupus, lunch and prizes. There will be a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start with registration at 6:30 a.m.
Proceeds for the tourney will assist the Konawaena Future Farmers of America chapter by paying for them to attend the State FFA Conference, which will be held on Kauai.

Hawaii Cycling Club
Kua Bay Training Time Trial: The next event is the 12.2 mile Kua Bay Training Time Trial on March 18. The time trial starts at Waikoloa Beach Road at 7 a.m. and goes South on Hwy 19 to Kua Bay. Registration is from 6:20-6:45 a.m. at Bike Works Beach and Sports in the Queens Shops.
Century Rides: Hawaii Cycling Club will host the fourth annual Century Rides on April 9 starting at Spencer Beach Park in Kawaihae. The three distances (30, 60 and 109 miles) will be held as a ride, not a race, and is also a fundraiser for Hospice of Kona. Aid stations, a picnic lunch and a t-shirt are all included in the $50 entry fee.
Couch to Century: For the second year, Hawaii Cycling is offering a Couch to Century 12-week training program every Saturday from now until April 1. The training program will include guided rides, tips and guidelines for both beginner and intermediate riders. The Couch to Century program is free. Riders will meet at 6:45 a.m. and should be prepared to go 5-10 miles for beginners and 20-23 miles for intermediate riders. Helmets are required.

St. Michael’s Golf Tournament
St. Michael, the Archangel Church, will host its eighth annual golf tournament on March 26 at the Kona Country Club. Entry fee is $300 for 2-person teams. The tournament is limited to the first 100 golfers.
Prizes will be given, including a $1-million dollar hole-in-one par-3 challenge. Every par-3 offers a chance at winning a $10k prize for a hole-in-one. Lunch and a silent auction will be included.

Earl Tamiya, Coach of the University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan golf team comments at the award ceremony for the recent Waikoloa Beach Resort 26th Amer Ari Intercollegiate Tournament.
John and Kathy Patrick, and their son Taylor, talk about Taylor playing as a freshman member of the University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Golf team.
Also, Jared Kinoshita was low scorer on the Vulcan team for the Amer Ari. Jared’s Aunt Barbara and Uncle Bob talk about people coming from the mainland for the event and why it is one of the nation’s most popular college tournaments.
