KAILUA-KONA — A Waimea man was arrested Wednesday morning on allegations that he assaulted two bicyclists visiting from California.
Herbert A.M. Lee, 30, is accused of assaulting the cyclists and taking a cell phone belonging to one of them, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Monday afternoon, South Kohala officers responded to Hapuna Beach Park where a man and woman, both 64, reported that as they were leaving the park, a truck drove into the exit lane, forcing the cyclists to veer off the road. The male cyclist reportedly shouted at the truck’s driver. The cyclists were visiting from Sacramento, police said.
Later, the truck reportedly approached the cyclists at Hapuna Beach Road and Old Puako Road.
There, police said, the driver got out of the truck, assaulted the cyclists, took the man’s cell phone and fled when someone attempted to intervene.
The victims were treated at the scene by fire department medics.
An investigation led officers to identify Lee as the suspect.
He was charged with second-degree robbery and two counts third-degree assault. His bail was set at $7,000. His initial court appearance is slated for Friday.
