Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Dec. 12 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and two of the drivers were younger than age 21.
Twelve drivers were arrested in the Hilo District and an additional 11 drivers were arrested in the Kona District, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Puna officers arrested four motorists in the district.
So far this year, there have been 1,066 DUI arrests compared with 1,036 during the same period last year.
There have been 1,374 major crashes so far this year compared with 1,494 during the same period last year.
To date there have been 31 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island public roads compared with 17 during the same period last year, an increase of 82 percent. Five of the fatal crashes this year involved multiple deaths.
