The Kohala Center and Brown University are offering tuition scholarships for three Hawaii high school students to participate in the Brown Environmental Leadership Lab-Hawaii scheduled March 22 through 30 on Hawaii Island. The deadline to apply is Jan. 10.
This national leadership program integrates the development of leadership skills with opportunities for high school students to study the biology, ecology and cultural traditions of Hawaii Island.
Program activities include meeting with cultural practitioners to learn about the culture and history of the island, participating in the restoration of native forests, exploring the geological wonders of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, kayaking, camping near the ocean and learning about coral reef ecology and management.

Materials to be submitted include a BELL Program application, scholarship application, teacher recommendation, official school transcript and a one-page essay describing what the student hopes to learn during the course.
Students applying for scholarships must send application materials directly to The Kohala Center. They do not need to pay the deposit or application fee.
WinterFest
slated for Dec. 14
Families can kick off the holiday season with a day of craft making, games, face painting, music and more at the 14th annual WinterFest from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. WinterFest is put on by Hawaii Montessori Schools-Kona Campus and is one of the school’s largest fundraisers.
Incorporating a Japanese themed event this year, Hawaii Montessori Schools students will provide a holiday performance at 10 a.m., just prior to the onset of festivities. The event also features entertainment from aikido demonstrations, taiko drummers, bon dancing and a Japanese tea ceremony.
Children can make an assortment of festive crafts at the craft tables, win prizes at a variety of everyone-wins game booths, play in a party bouncer and have their faces and hair painted. The whole family will enjoy browsing the sweets and savories at a bake sale, as well as visiting the various vendors displaying their wares.
The silent auction will feature dozens of items and services donated from community businesses including Artistic Creations Tattoo Studio, Body Glove Cruises, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Captain Zodiac, Costco, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Lealea Fitness in Waimea, Lehua Jewelers, Ocean Sports, Persimmon’s, Waikiki Aquarium and Waipio Ride The Rim.
Admission is free, and each booth requires a nominal fee for participation. Coupon books, valued at more than $16, may be purchased for $10 in advance at the school’s’ Kona and Waimea campuses. The coupon books include tickets for crafts, games and bouncer activities.
