Thirteen wahine from around the state competed Thursday night for the title of Miss Aloha Hula, the Merrie Monarch Festival’s prize for the best overall solo hula dancer. Thousands of spectators packed Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium in Hilo to watch the competition. Two wahine from the Big Island were among the competitors, each of whom is required to dance a hula kahiko and a hula auana.
