How do you handle, clean and store your most precious family photos, documents and heirlooms? This question will be answered during a Kona Historical Society Hanohano O Kona lecture from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center.
Speaker Malia Van Heukelem has worked with art and artifacts of all shapes and sizes over a career that has spanned work as collections manager for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Art in Public Places Program and Iolani Palace, to her current duties as preservation management specialist with the University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library.
Attendees may bring a precious item for diagnosis.

Libraries closed
for Labor Day
All public libraries will be closed for Labor Day from Saturday through Monday.
Kealakekua Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.
Mediation training planned in Hilo
Kuikahi Mediation Center is offering basic mediation training Sept. 10-11 and 17-18 in Hilo.
Participants will learn approaches for dealing with people in conflict through lecture, group discussion, hands-on exercises, and mediation simulations.
Upon successful completion of the training, participants may apply to join Kuikahi’s apprenticeship program.

Kona Orchid
Society meets
The Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy on Kealakaa Street. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Ben Oliveros from Orchid Eros will discuss “All the Orchids I’ve Loved Before … and Killed.” He will advise of which ones are most difficult and how to take care of them.
Attendees may pre-order plants from his website that he will bring to the meeting. Bring a potluck dish to share and a pest-free flowering orchid for show and tell. There will also be a drawing for orchids.

September Hui Laulima meeting canceled
Because of Labor Day, the West Hawaii Hui Laulima will not meet on its regularly scheduled date this Friday. The next meeting will be Oct. 7.
