“Sounds of the Season,” Waimea Community Theatre’s 23 annual Holiday Concert, will celebrate the many facets of the holiday season, including Christmas music secular and sacred, music for Channukah and Kwanzaa, and songs for the winter holidays.
WCC’s director since 2005, Barbara Kopra, has chosen songs that evoke different styles and moods, including selections with traditional and modern roots, and featuring styles as varied as a Spanish lullaby or country gospel music. Ballads, waltzes, and swing numbers, jazz and pop, will all find their place in the program.
One uniting theme among the variety of styles will be the chorus’ incorporation of a substantial orchestral accompaniment for the annual holiday concert. Drawn from performers from all parts of the Big Island, the instrumentalists will once again fill the stage in Waimea with a backing for the choral numbers, lending a richness of sound and texture to the performance that few chorales can match. Planned for Dec. 10-11, the Christmas concerts will be held at Kahilu Theatre. Tickets will be available both online and from local ticket outlets approximately at Thanksgiving.
The chorus rehearses from mid-August until the holiday concert and again from mid-January to a spring concert in early June. Averaging 60 voices, Waimea Community Chorus has been entertaining North Hawaii since 1994 and a number of members from those early days still sing with the group.
The winter concert rehearsal season begins with a social hour and registration starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the St. James Episcopal Church on Kawaihae Road in Waimea. Rehearsal will commence at 7 p.m.
Prospective participants can register on the first three Tuesdays of rehearsal, and thereafter by consultation with the director. While no audition is required, those wishing to join must be free to attend rehearsals consistently on Tuesday evenings until the December shows.
