HONOLULU (AP) — The Honolulu Fire Department says a firefighter has died from injuries suffered during routine training.
Clifford Rigsbee was on a sled pulled by a personal watercraft off Diamond Head Tuesday, when the watercraft operator noticed Rigsbee was unconscious in the ocean. It wasn’t clear how he got there. The operator administered aid and firefighters brought Rigsbee to shore.
The department says Rigsbee died on Thursday. Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins says the department is investigating what happened.
Rigsbee joined the department in 1995. He was assigned to the Waikiki Fire Station.
He was a triathlete and had won several Tinman Triathlon competitions. He received a Certificate of Commendation for rescuing an injured hiker at Koko Head when he was off duty in 2012.
