Fifteen students from public and private high schools in Hawaii have been awarded the prestigious 2016 Chancellor’s Scholarship by the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
One West Hawaii student, Orion Friels of Kealakehe High School, was among the recipients.
Valued in excess of $26,500, the award covers four years of tuition for students graduating from a Hawaii high school who earned either a GPA of at least 3.5, a combined 1800 SAT (reading, writing, math) or a composite score of 27 on the ACT while demonstrating leadership and/or community service.
Wildfire prevention encouraged
May is Wildfire Preparedness Month. Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, firefighters and government agencies across the state are encouraging people to take action toward protecting their loved ones, homes and Hawaii’s natural resources from wildfire.
Kanehoa subdivision off Kawaihae Road halfway between Kawaihae and Waimea will hold a Wildfire Preparedness Day event on May 7. Volunteers will remove flammable vegetation from the neighborhood. Throughout 2015, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization worked with residents of Kanehoa to help them become a nationally-recognized Firewise Community. The organization will hold a ceremony at the end of the May 7 work day to recognize the community. To sign up for the work day, call 885-0900.
Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization has federal grant funding to work with a number of communities statewide, including Waialea, Kailapa, Puako, and Waikii Ranch, to assist them through the Firewise Communities Recognition Program process.
Drought and wildfires are projected to be extreme in the coming months because of the recent drought caused by El Nino.
