HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police say they suspect foul play in the death of an unidentified person whose decomposed body was found by a group of volunteers cleaning up a steep hillside area.
Authorities say the body found Sunday had been in advanced stages of decomposition and its gender could not be determined.
“At this time, we do believe foul play is involved in this particular case. It’s just because of certain circumstances that we discovered at the side of the hillside right now,” said homicide detective Lt. Phillip Lavarias.
Firefighters had responded to the scene to help police and the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office with the recovery. Lavarias says steep terrain and wet weather hampered their efforts.
The case has been classified as an unattended death investigation.
Hawaii News Now reports (https://bit.ly/1Sp33zI ) that Sai Weiss and Cameron Calistro, the co-founders of Affinity, an eco-conscious clothing company, had organized the community volunteer cleanup. They came across the remains as they were picking up trash in the area.
“It was pretty gruesome. I don’t want to speculate on what happened, but it was really weird, eerie vibes” Calistro said.
The two men were interviewed by police and allowed to finish their cleanup efforts in surrounding areas.
“I’m hoping there’s some kind of rest for the family of the individual that was found and we just really hope that the family and everyone that’s involved they can close this case” said Weiss.
