The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits through Sunday afternoon.
Forecasters said one to two inches of snow could fall, accompanied by patchy ice on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 12,000 feet in elevation. The service cautioned of snow, ice and freezing rain.
The service forecast southwest winds of 10 mph to 25 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s to mid 30s.
The Mauna Kea Access Road was closed as of 9:20 a.m. Sunday at the Visitor Information Station because of snow and ice on the roadway. The temperature was 30.8 degrees at the summit.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, according to the service, which cautioned drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.
