More people have been arrested on DUI charges so far this year than this time last year, police report, although the number of major accidents has dropped.
Between March 7 and Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 231 DUI arrests compared with 189 during the same period last year, an increase of 22.2 percent. Police have arrested people on a charge of DUI in all districts but North Kohala.
The other arrests so far this year in the West Hawaii Today readership area include: 84 in Kona, 16 in South Kohala, three in Hamakua and five in Ka’u. In total there were 108 arrests in the area, or 46.7 percent of all arrests so far this year.
There have been 274 major accidents so far this year compared with 292 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent, police wrote.
So far this year, there have been four fatal crashes on Hawaii Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 33.3 percent for fatal crashes.
