Kamehameha Schools Hawaii will stage its third Hawaiian language opera, “Haupu” this evening as part of the school’s annual Hoike.
The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the school’s Koaia Gymnasium, 16-716 Volcano Road in Keaau.
“Haupu” is based on the legend of Kana and Niheu and their attempt to rescue their mother, Hina, who is being held captive on the cliffs of Haupu on Molokai, having been abducted by the chief Kapepeekauila. Niheu and Kana and their warriors arrive to rescue her and battle with Kapepeekauila and return her to her husband, Hakalanileo of Hilo.
Hoike is a an all-school production that tells a story through beautiful and powerful mele (song), oli (chant) and hula (dance). The first Hoike took place in 2004.
Proceeds from the production will help to offset the cost of the Hoike A Hai performing arts department trip to the American High School Theatre Festival at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. This production will debut the opera that will be performed in Scotland at the festival.
Tickets prices range from $10 to 15, depending on seat location.
