On Feb. 5, Parker Middle School students participated in the school’s annual Unity Day.
This year’s theme was Hawaiian navigation and included numerous cross curricular learning experiences. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 enjoyed a movie describing the worldwide voyage of Hokulea.
Additionally, students visited Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo where they learned about the role stars played as a navigational tool in ancient voyages. To end Unity Day Kaniala Buckley shared his experience as a crew member on two legs of Hokulea voyages in 2015 and 2014.
“Through this year’s Unity Day activities, students learned how humans persevered and thrived using their knowledge and skill without the luxury of the modern technology we have today,” said Tina Doherty, Parker Middle School division head.
